Simple tips for creating a manageable skincare routine

The past year has seen some the best skincare launches to date, adding to our never-ending wishlist. However, with so many products on the market and so much information to absorb, it can start to feel somewhat overwhelming on how to begin your routine.

You don’t want to overdo it with products but you also want to make sure your routine is giving your skin the best results. So, we’ve compiled some handy tips to help.

Figuring out your skin type

First and foremost, figuring out your skin type is a beneficial step as it’ll make it easier to find products that are best suited to your skin and concerns. Your skin type can range from any of the following sensitive, dry, oily, combination and normal. According to dermatological skincare experts, Eucerin “Skin type is determined by genetics. The condition of our skin can, however, vary greatly according to the various internal and external factors it is subjected to.”

If you’re uncertain on your skin type, there a number of ways to figure it out. If you’re short on time, try applying a mild cleanser to your face after a shower and waiting 30 minutes. Once the time is up, you can get an indication of your skin type. “If you still need further advice, contact a dermatologist or pharmacist.” Says Eucerin.

What’s your budget?

Setting a budget on how much you want to spend on skincare products is a great way to fight temptation. I recently came across a moisturiser for around the £130 mark that I may or may not have put in my basket. However, anything above £100 for a single item is way, way over my budget. It’s important to remember that just because a product is pricey, it doesn’t mean it’ll work better than something much cheaper and vice versa. It’s about finding what products work best not only for your skin type but for your budget too.

Cleanse Cleanse Cleanse

Cleansing is an important step to any skincare routine as it helps to remove dirt and impurities that may have built up throughout the day. “I recommend cleansing twice a day, morning and night without overdoing it.” Says Dr Ross Perry, Medical Director of Cosmedics. He continues “It’s important to cleanse the skin properly now more than ever as stress can contribute to making our skin appear dull, dry and congested.”

“Try to also choose the right cleanser for your skin type. For sensitive skin, I’d recommend using a hydrating, gentle cleanser. For those with more oily, acne-prone skin a salicylic acid-based cleanser will help unclog the pores and remove excess oil. For those who tend to have dry skin, a cream cleanser can help your skin’s top layer retain more moisture.”

The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is a great product for anyone with sensitive and dry skin. It ensures that it doesn’t strip away any vital moisture and gently removes any impurities. The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Cleanser is a must-have to help control excess sebum, along with soothing and protecting the skin.

Don’t skip on sunscreen

A common myth is that during the winter, you don’t need to wear a sunscreen that contains an SPF. Dr Perry says “It’s actually just as important as applying it during the summer months as the harmful UV rays can still penetrate the skin. Try to use an SPF of at least 30 and take advantage of getting some vitamin D when the sun is shining.”

Practice makes perfect

Don’t worry if you can’t get into the swing of things straight away with your routine or aren’t seeing instant results. Everything takes time and works differently for each and every one of us. At the very least, try to stick with using a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen with at least SPF 30 in your routine and remember professional help is always there.
