‘It’s all in your head’: 100 of the stupidest things people have ever said about mental illness

If you’ve opened up to people about living with mental illness, chances are that at some point someone has said something almost impressively stupid about your condition or mental health in general.

We are no strangers to ‘invisible illness’, with many of the most serious illnesses and disabilities often having no symptoms that you can see with the naked eye (Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer. Live Disease, Diabetes, Arthritis, Dementia, Lyme Disease, Heart Conditions, Migraines, etc), and yet people are especially ignorant when it comes to mental illnesses.

We’ve probably all heard the infamous ‘It’s all in your head’ by now and it’s one of the worst, isn’t it? The most basic of conversations or even Google searches could debunk this phrase in moments:

  1. There are actually many many symptoms of mental illness that manifest physically and in other parts of the body, like sweating, shaking and having difficulty breathing that comes with a panic attack.
  1. Even if it were “all in my head” what’s your point? The brain is only one of the most important organs in our bodies, no big deal if it becomes unwell, right?
  1. Double even if it were “all in my head” what’s your point? Your kidney infection is all in your kidney, Sandra, it doesn’t make it any less dangerous.

And yet people continue to say it.
