Valentine’s day is a highly controversial topic in many circles. In some respects, it is highly commercialised, and the emphasis, for the most part, is placed on the gifts one receives. But, at its core, Valentines is still very much about love; and there are a few things you can do to bring the holiday back to its compassionate roots.
Remember, making people feel good has a massive effect on your wellbeing, so there is no better reason to spread the love.
Communication
Telling someone how much they mean to you can be hugely cathartic and impactful on your mental health. The show of vulnerability allows people to see your true feelings, as we usually hide behind bravado and toughness. Sure the exposure may feel a little uneasy, but the ultimate pay off of reciprocation is incomparable. In the golden age of technology, you can do this from the comfort of your bed, so what are you waiting for?
But don’t just do this with your partner. Message people you love and tell them just that. It doesn’t have to be romantic love, but a show of genuine compassion can do immense good to someone’s self-esteem.
A Gesture of Goodwill
If you live with your partner, then offer something you wouldn’t usually do or something they find themselves getting frustrated at. Don’t make a massive thing about it, do it, and no doubt they will notice. This can be as small as washing up, painting a wall looking particularly dirty, or even sorting out that junk draw which we all have somewhere in our houses.
Give your time
The most important thing you can give this Valentines is your time. If you are not alone at home, then make the others in the house feel loved. Spend time with them and put in the effort you otherwise don’t show. Perhaps cook together, go for a long walk, or do that puzzle that your great aunt got you for Christmas.
Cosy Night
Whether it be because of work commitments, busy schedules, or friendship groups, we all complain we never get enough cosy nights in. Well, considering we aren’t allowed to leave the house, there has never been a perfect time to jump on the sofa with a massive bowl of popcorn. For extra partner points, put on a movie you know they love — even if you don’t.
You do of course need the following for a perfect cosy night: Fluffy socks, thick blankets, lots of sugary snacks, pizza or junk food of your choice, hot choccy, and a significant space to cuddle in.
Get Crafty
You can still give gifts on Valentines without it costing a week’s wage. Why not put together a photo album of your favourite pictures? Yes, I understand that our phones are technically photo albums, but there is also something incredibly nostalgic about a physical journal of photos.
If you have a green thumb, then up-cycling should already be a concept you are familiar with. For newbies out there, up-cycling is the act of taking one thing (seemingly unwanted) and turning it into something else. Old candle jars can be sanded and cleaned to form gorgeous drinking glasses, and with a little care, a piece of wood can be turned into a jewellery stand. The sky is the limit here, but do be careful with a hammer and nails!
Whether you are alone, with a partner, single, or a happy hoe, Valentine’s day is your opportunity to show someone you love them. Don’t just say it, prove it. The word ‘love’ is too easy to throw out there. I think I have said it about all members of the Vampire Diaries cast at least once. Instead of just saying it, let your actions speak for you because when the time comes for it to be your turn, it sure does feel great.
