Bipolar UK is the national charity dedicated to supporting individuals with the much misunderstood and debilitating condition of bipolar disorder.
On Tuesday 30th march, World Bipolar Day, the charity will be hosting a virtual conference, chaired by award-winning TV and radio presenter, Leah Charles-King.
The event, which is free to attend, follows recent research from Bipolar UK which found that many people living with bipolar disorder have been greatly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. The conference will formerly launch the Bipolar Commission which will identify high impact interventions that will empower people living with bipolar to live well.
The conference is open to anyone affected by bipolar, including pre and post diagnosis, friends and family and professionals. It aims to give hope that things can and will get better. There will be a range of breakout sessions including:
The event will cover the basics of bipolar disorder, and all you need to know, for people who are new to the condition. Professor Ian Jones, from Cardiff University, will lead with information on how to manage bipolar disorder effectively.
The charity hopes to tackle the mental health stigma in Black and ethnic minority communities. The interactive forum, chaired by Leah Charles-king, will feature a cross section of panellists who will explore the stigma that exists within the Black community and other ethnic minority groups.
Dr Clare Dolman from King’s College London will be focusing on the impact of pregnancy, the postpartum and menopause, and she’ll be joined by Bipolar UK Ambassador and actor Natasha Naomi Rea, who is a parent living with bipolar.
Professor Guy Goodwin from Oxford University and Bipolar UK Ambassador Luyando Malawo will be talking about how to get a diagnosis.
Bipolar UK will also be launching the Bipolar Commission, a research programme that will be using lived experience to transform the health system for people affected by bipolar.
By enabling attendees and panellists to share their experiences, the Bipolar UK hope to empower people from the bipolar community to feel better supported and more inspired during this challenging and ongoing period.
Simon Kitchen, CEO of Bipolar UK, comments: “Our online conference, is the UK’s largest ever gathering of those living with bipolar. Underpinned by the theme of diversity, it is the perfect opportunity for people in the bipolar community to come together in one place and hear first-hand from an array of influential individuals on how they have navigated their own experience of living with bipolar to achieve their inspirational life and career goals.
“By hosting this virtual event, we want to empower people to feel better supported and inspired during this challenging time – particularly in light of the difficulties which many people will have faced over the course of the coronavirus pandemic and periods of isolation. This also want to galvanise action through our Bipolar Commission so no one with bipolar is required to suffer alone.”
As the only national charity dedicated to empowering individuals and families affected by bipolar disorder, Bipolar UK offers a range of resources and services for people affected by bipolar.
This includes a moderated eCommunity, one-to-one support by telephone and email, and peer support groups for people affected by bipolar, facilitated by trained and supported volunteers.
The online conference will take place on Tuesday 30th October from 1.00pm – 4.30pm. For more information and to register for the event visit: http://bit.ly/bcon2021
