TikTok Beauty buys: Is The Ordinary worth the hype?

After hours of scrolling I ended up on SkincareTok with lots of recommendations on what is the product worth investing in. The Ordinary products are recommended by various dermatologists and a popular creator Hyram (@skincarebyhyram) with 6.8 million followers. After seeing hundreds of videos of  I figured I’d test a few products and see if it was worth the hype. I was surprised by the results!

The Ordinary products are cruelty-free. They have been sold out across various sites due to the high demand. I finally managed to get a couple of products and I was super excited to try them. What makes them even more appealing is they are affordable.

Products start at £3.90 — which is surprising given how good the results are. I have seen numerous videos of people sharing their problematic skin and how The Ordinary helped.

If I’m honest choosing, what to try was super confusing but thankfully, TikTok has thousands of videos on what to buy and how to apply. The Ordinary site also has comprehensive guides which are super helpful.

The site is also transparent about whether products are vegan and what boxes they tick.

One of their most popular products is the ‘AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution’ which is an exfoliating facial, containing strong acids. If I’m honest, I was apprehensive to try the product given the ingredients and the Tik Tok videos from dermatologists advising it is key to not leave it on your skin for too long. However, I took the plunge and gave it a try and my skin felt clearer from first use which is rare.

I had also heard numerous people talk about how incredible their cleanser is and at that price, I figured why not give it a try. After all, what is a skincare routine without a good cleanser?

At first, I didn’t really like the smell as it is un=fragranced but I know fragrance isn’t great for your skin so I found comfort in that and persisted. I’ve been using it for the past couple of months now as has my flatmate. Often cleansers can be super pricey, whereas this is an affordable product that removes makeup really well.

I also gave their Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% a try, which were an interesting sticky texture. After using them for a month and learning what order to apply things in my skin is in a much better place. Given the maskne and the cold weather I really needed some changes to my regime but I’ve learnt more is less and the wrong combination can make things worse.

Finally, I have been using the High Adherence Silicone Primer (£3.90) which is super lightweight and hydrates my skin whilst also leaving a matt finish.

The Ordinary is definitely worth the hype.

Whilst it isn’t directly comparable with higher-end products, it is fairly close at a quarter of the price. There are products I probably wouldn’t buy again —  but overall, I am impressed by the brand.
