It’s time to close the gender pain gap

Female pain has historically been sidelined and dismissed by the medical community, and it’s often written off as an unavoidable part of womanhood. Centuries of unconscious bias and lack of research has created a phenomenon where women are often neglected, misdiagnosed or prescribed the wrong treatment.

The gender pain gap is caused by a knowledge disparity in the medical community, the male body is well studied and understood, whilst the female body is under-researched. Up until 1993, women were excluded from medical trials, so the efficacy, dosage and side-effects of many medications (including over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen) were never tested on women.

There is very little research on how the female anatomy and the menstrual cycle can affect the way women experience or present pain. Whilst 19% of people with penises suffer from erectile dysfunction and 90% of people with vaginas suffer from PMS, ED studies outnumber PMS research 5 to 1*.

The gender pain gap also influences how women receive hospital treatment. Women have to wait 26 minutes longer to get painkillers in ER and are 13% to 25% less likely than men to receive opioids for abdominal pain*.

Daye is on a mission to close the gender gaps in medical research & innovation, starting with menstrual pain – which affects 9 in 10 people with periods.
