Read this before you sleep: Comfort for anyone struggling right now

Right now, the world is a cruel, scary and difficult place. You might be feeling anxious and alone; and so I wanted to write a night-time note for you to read before you go to sleep.

I am lucky enough to be with my family, but I know so many don’t have this.

And so I want to offer comfort to anyone who needs it right now — especially as the night-time can be really difficult to get through.

When your thoughts are running all over your head, memories locked away into a ‘don’t open me box’ at the back of your mind trying to make themselves present, falling asleep can feel impossible.

But let’s stop focusing on this, and focus on these words, instead.

I know I don’t know you, not personally. But you need to know that you are so very strong. I don’t mean that in a patronising way; I mean that in a way that you have got through the most horrendous year, and you’re still here. You’re still holding on. You are resilient.

There may be moments when you want to give up. But don’t. You are needed in this world.

You are worthy of happiness and love, and everything that comes with it.

Your emotions and feelings, especially towards the pandemic we are in, are completely valid.

Know that no matter how lonely you feel, you are not alone. Absolutely not. Maybe physically speaking right now, but not in spirit. We are all here with you. We are here to get through this with you.

In a minute, take a step back from your phone or your computer and try to rest your eyes. It might be difficult to sleep right now; so turn off anything that could be a distraction.

Every time you have a bad night, or are feeling alone, please come back to this note. Please read the words over and over and allow them to make home in your head, even if just for a little while to comfort you through feelings of fear and anxiety.

And remember these words:

You are brave, strong and resilient. You are worthy, valid and loved (yes, you are loved, please believe it). You have a place in this world, and you are needed. You are doing great, just as you are. Each day is a new day, a new opportunity for you to explore and grow. Stop putting pressure on yourself, and realise that you are doing what you need to do for you — and that is the greatest act of self-care. You are a brilliant person, and we need you to keep holding on.

Please do.
